Department of Economic Development - Economic Policy E-Commerce InformationWhat is E-Commerce? E-Commerce, also known as electronic commerce, is the process of conducting business over the Internet which allows an instantaneous connection to local, national and international markets. Creating a web site and conducting business on-line removes many of the traditional obstacles that our geographic distance, small markets and sparse population present and plays a vital role in the diversification of our economy. Considered revolutionary a mere decade ago, the global prevalence of E-Commerce has swept the Yukon and is available to anyone with a computer and Internet access. Why E-Commerce? Ninety per cent of Yukon residents have available access to a high-speed Internet connection and over 50 per cent of Yukon businesses are currently on-line. Once “connected” you can market, buy and sell products and services, enter into contracts, expedite shipments, connect with other businesses, suppliers and customers, access your bank accounts and market information and communicate via email with employees, either in the next office or across the continent. As one of the most “connected” jurisdictions in the country, by accessing the limitless possibilities of E-Commerce, Yukon large, small and home-based businesses are poised to participate in this electronic and modern-day “Gold Rush”. E-Commerce in the Yukon Educational Modules The E-Commerce in the Yukon CD Rom and accompanying workbook were developed by Yukon Finance to guide college instructors, public librarians and First Nations economic development officers through the rapidly emerging E-Commerce marketplace. The four modules include a pocket-sized CD Rom that illuminates global and territorial e-commerce trends, navigates the legislative process and outlines primary steps for launching and conducting a business on-line. Each module can also be downloaded below in Adobe Acrobat format. To view and print these documents, you need the free Adobe Acrobat Reader software. E-Commerce in the Yukon received support through the Indian Affairs and Northern Development’s Innovation and Knowledge Fund. The fund will distribute $4.4 million over four years to projects in the Yukon, Northwest Territories and Nunavut aimed at fostering knowledge, innovation and the participation of northerners in Canada’s emerging knowledge-based economy.
